Meaning: This quote means a real friend is someone who will not like to see you suffer.  A friend is someone who will rather them suffer, than watch you suffer.  Another real friend who will react back to that situation, is rather than the real friend suffer, the person who suffers will feel bad/guilt, and would rather themselves sacrifice/suffer for them.  Keep your friends close, because you never know when you will need a friend there rather than family, to help you in a situation.
